Time outs seem to be less effective for truly hyper active children like those with ADHD. It takes a great amount of effort for them to sit still and quiet. sometimes I think they work so hard to be still and quiet in time out that they have an even harder time when they return to the activity. I like to give those children a task instead. it still removes them from the class, but they are doing something rather than trying to sit still. For instance, while in time out (in a place where they will not distract) have the child wiggle each foot and then each hand 50 times. Instead of sitting out at recess, have the child run laps for an allotted time period.

I like the idea of a task rather than a timeout (although running for punishment is specifically forbidden as we want them to run for enjoyment and health).
